Why Nottingham?
Nottingham’s buses are successful because the system is designed around passengers, not just operators. Consistent investment, simple fares, reliable services and supportive policies all reinforce each other, creating a network people actually want to use.

Nottingham’s success isn’t down to one thing – it’s a combination of smart policy, strong operators, and consistent investment.
Bus partnerships are managed by the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), and Nottingham City Transport (NCT), the main bus operator, is majority owned by the city council. Success factors include:
-
Strong public ownership & reinvestment
-
Simple, integrated ticketing
-
Nottingham has made paying for buses easy and flexible:
-
High service frequency & reliability
-
Bus priority & infrastructure
-
Investment in a modern, green fleet
-
Strong branding & user experience
-
Supportive local policy, for example the Workplace Parking Levy, from which Revenue is reinvested into public transport
-
Integration with wider transport

The Mayor of the East Midlands has stated that an Enhanced Partnership approach is favoured for the region, prioritising partnership over franchising to deliver improvements.
The Nottingham Extended Enhanced Partnership is a formal agreement between local councils (City and County) and bus operators to improve bus services, running from 2022 to 2032. It aims to maintain Nottingham's high-quality transport network and secure government funding. The partnership is a collaboration between Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and local operators like Nottingham City Transport, Trent Barton, and CT4N.
The partnership aims to increase bus usage by improving reliability, integrating services with the Robin Hood Network, and supporting the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).
Quality Bus delegates will be able to visit key sites and experience Nottingham’s bus infrastructure on its new, zero emission buses.
